lesson 6. SOFT VOWELS Я Е Ё Ю
As soon as you master the sound Й, you can try working with the soft vowels. Do you remember the hard vowels – А О У Э? Great!
Actually, it is very easy to learn Я Ё Ю Е because they consist of the sound Й plus one of the hard vowels you already know.
Я = ЙА [yah]; Ё = ЙО [yaw]; Е = ЙЭ [yeh]; Ю = ЙУ [yoo]
Let’s talk about several positions where you can meet these soft vowels:
1. At the beginning of a word – ЯМА, ЮНГА, ЕВА, ЁЛКА.
2. After another vowel – МАЯК, УЮТ, ЗАЁМ, Я ЕМ.
Now the most IMPORTANT part! How do these vowels soften the consonants before them? I hope you remember the И-position of your tongue and you’ve mastered your smiling. If not, please, go back to the previous lessons.
The soft vowels soften the consonants and while doing so, they lose that short Й-sound! I hope you understand this! It is a very common mistakes that weakens your pronunciation. Again – the Й is ‘absorbed’ by the consonant before the soft vowel.
Не МЙЯ, а МЯ. Не ПЙЮ, а ПЮ.
You do this in 2 steps:
– pronounce the soft consonant before Я, Е, Ё, Ю;
– pronounce what’s left of the soft vowel (without Й).
