Russian sound P [r] has no counterpart in English.
There are many ways to learn how to pronounce it. Some people suggest saying “butter” very fast. Some say it’s better to imitate a purring cat. I use the method of Russian speech therapists.
First, you need to understand everything about articulation in theory.
Articulation explanation from a Russian speech therapist:
“The tip of the tongue needs to touch the teeth ridge. If you touch an area behind the front upper teeth you will feel little bumps. This is a teeth ridge. It is also called alveolar. The tip of the tongue must be pushed against the alveolar. The tongue must be shaped as a cup. Like that. Sides of your tongue are pressed firmly against upper molars. The tip of the tongue will vibrate near alveolar when air goes through the middle of the tongue. This is how it works. This is a correct sound ‘r’.”
To make a SOFT Р’ spread your lips slightly. The middle part of your tongue should be slightly raised.
