lesson 1. Vowels А О У Э О; COnsonants Б П М В Ф.
As you probably noticed, we don’t start with alphabetical order. We start from the easiest to the most difficult. I don’t want to put you in any stress right from the beginning.
Russian sounds can be divided into vowels and consonants. Unlike English vowels, Russian ones can’t be short or long but the can form syllables and be stressed. Russian consonants can be voiced and unvoiced, and they can fall into hard and soft positions. We will talk about it in the future lessons.
Now let’s learn some of the vowels and consonants.
A [ah]. Russian A somewhat resembles the English a in the word ‘father’ but it’s a little shorter.
O [aw]. Russian O resembles the English vowel represented by letters aw in ‘warm’, ‘law’, but it’s not so long.
Э [eh]. Russian Э sounds like English E in ‘men’ or ‘let’ but with your mouth more closed.
У [oo]. Russian У somewhat resembles the English double o – ‘wool’, ‘pool’, ‘room’ but your lips should be much more protruded and rounded.
П [p]. Russian П resembles English sound P in the word ‘please’. But no aspiration!
Б [b]. Russian Б is similar to English B in the words ‘bolt’ and ‘back’. М [m]. Russian М resembles M in ‘moon’ and ‘man’.
В [v]. Russian B sounds like V in ‘van’.
Ф [f]. Russian Ф resembles English F in ‘fact’.
